What is Maintenance of Certification?

Beginning in 2002, all American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto) diplomates must participate in Maintenance of Certification, (MOC). The MOC program is a ten year cycle which involves annual updates on the individual diplomate, self-assessment, evaluation of performance in practice, and an examination the diplomate must pass to renew his/her certificate.

Lifelong Learning as Part of the Quality Improvement Process

The following miniseminar was presented at the 2010 Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO. Dr. Wax begins the discussion by reviewing the evolution of residency training and changes in practice. He highlights the significant drivers behind these changes and introduces the concept that lifelong learning begins in residency. Dr. Nielsen furthers the discussion by examining how CME, Research, Quality and Health Policy are inter-connected. He also explains how Performance Improvement CME (PI-CME) is an increasingly critical element of continuing education. Dr. Miller wraps up the discussion with an overview of the certification process and the four components of Maintenance of Certification (MOC). He ends the session with a thorough explanation of the importance of MOC.
